Religious or not, Lenten season in Pampanga offers one of the most "interesting" traditions. Devout Catholics atone for their sins by whipping their backs bloody with bamboo sticks & nailing themselves to wooden crosses. Check out our list of religious events & ceremonies to experience in Angeles City.
April 5, 2014 : "Tulauk" Lenten Sarzuela
When: 7pm
Where: Holy Rosary Parish Church, Angeles City Pampanga. Only 2 blocks away from Amasya Guesthouse.
What: What is a sarzuela? We'll let Wikipedia tell you. Last year, the town of Sta. Rita, Pampanga hosted the first sarzuela in a very long time. This year, Angeles City will host the event. The opera performance will be an outdoor theater at Holy Rosary Parish Church.
Here is a clip from Inquirer News article last year...
"...this is where this town staged the Passion in zarzuela form on Tuesday, the first time in 113 years that the Filipino version of the opera was used anywhere in the country to retell the Good Friday story...
...No zarzuela version of the Passion had been staged until “Tulauk,” said Robby Tantingco, executive director of the Center for Kapampangan Studies...
...Alviz used ordinary Kapampangan for the lyrics of the show, cast women in men’s roles, employed storytellers whose reflection on the Passion story gave “Tulauk” a distinctive Filipino interpretation of the Good Friday story."
